his hair is gray idk how old he was when we bought him neither did the previous owner so how can i tell

Well, usually a sign of a hamster getting older is when their fur will fall out. They may look splotchy or scraggly and they may be weak and will more than likely sleep more and more often. They normally only live to be somewhere between 2 and 3 years of age. I hope this helps you in anyway. :]
