Should I hi-light or low-light my hair?

I have dark brown hair and I started getting a little grey a while back so I decided to dye it a reddish brown which is the closest to my natural color. Well, I am finding more and more gray. As my hair grows out the grey really stands out from my dark hair. Someone said "Hi-light it". Someone else said "Low -light it." What would be the best to cover my grey as long as possible?

I would do low lights because they are cooler and if you did to light highlights they could look like grey

Well if you're getting grays, live with it or dye it when needed. So get it dyed then get high-lights or low-lights. Personally, i would get both done. But just getting high lights or low lights might not cover all of the grays.

Hope this helps. =]

Use both. This will give you superior coverage and the longest wear. If you go brassy between colorings try a glaze in between.

Accrding to Lynne Chapman, BellaOnline's Hair Editor:

"I suggest camouflaging the gray roots using a low-light or color-weaving procedure."

Why hide the grey? There's something so distinguished about a greying man! Perhaps a third option would be just to go ahead and let nature have it's way. Of course if you are very young (like under 30), I would go with the highlights - they will make your greys blend more naturally.

A good way to decide is to look at pictures to see what you like.

Making an appointment for a consultation(usually free) and getting there early so you have time to browse mags is a great place to start. Frequently I reccommend alternating both hi-lights (lighter)and low-lights(darker) to my clients. Showing off the contrast always looks great!

The best way to hide the grey is to high light it. The lighter color will achieve an illusion effect that tends to hide the grey that is growing out. Many of my clients have seen remarkable results with their highlights hiding the grey. They also find that they don't have to color their hair quite as often which is great for keeping your hair healthy!! Hope this helps

If you want it to look natural, you would want to start adding in a lighter color so your grey won't be so contrasting when it grows out. If you want to cover them, you would want to do low lights to blend the grey more. I usually do a blend of both on my clients. As they start to get more grey, the more of the hi-light I add in. A good haircolorist will know what will compliment you and be the easiest upkeep for your lifestyle.
