Hennas are available in different colours. Does it say Black on the box?

Go back to the store and purchase Black Henna - make sure you get the stuff for the hair, not the skin (mende tattoos)

Mix the henna in a glass bowl with warm/hot water. Mix until consistency of thick soup. Wear latex gloves . Use a hairdressers dye brush to apply (like the one pictured here) http://www.bewild.com/hairdyetinbr.html

Brush henna on hair, beginning at front top, and work your way back through the whole head. Cover head with plastic bag (can be loose, just to keep from dripping on clothes and floor) and let sit about 20 - 45 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. The henna may stain pillows and clothes for a few days if not rinsed really, really well. But after a couple of shampoos, she'll be good to go.

Good luck!

I don't know how to use the henna but it is a very reddish color. I don't know if you can get it to black. If you do use it and it does not turn out the color you want be very careful with what you choose to use over it. A lot of hair colors do not react well with henna. It can be very damaging to the hair.

Well, because your mom has black hair, using red henna won't make it red, the worst thing it'll do is give it maybe a red/brown tint or even highlights, especially where the grays are. If she has black hair and you're using black henna, nothing bad should happen, however, this is VERY important, if she has done anything chemical to her hair, test the henna first, because unless you have body art henna (the kind that won't ruin your hair), then it might turn an icky green color, so make sure you have body art henna and not compound henna (the bad kind). and here's how you use it:

First off, get a plastic container, such as a ziploc box, then, put the henna in it, you're gonna need about 200gms of it for every foot of hair.

Next, mix half lemon juice and half water into the henna until it become the consistency of mashed potatoes or yogurt.

Once this is done, cover the container and put it somewhere warm, (for ex: on top of a cable box or the fridge or even the garage) Leave it there overnight and in the morning there should be a top layer of color, that's the dye thats needed for your hair.

Go get your bathroom ready, and let me tell you, henna is MESSY!!! so wear clothes you don't mind staining and put newspaper everywhere, the shower is usually good cause it washes right off of the tile.

Leave the henna in your hair for at least 3ish hours, the longer its on, the more prominent the color and the better it should turn out.

Then, wash it off normally, now, this may be hard to do and may take awhile, you'll also have a hay smell in your hair for a bit, but the conditioning affects and color are worth it. Then your done!

PS: here's a site i sometimes use when i wanna try something new w/the henna, hope it helps and good luck!
