And how often is normal to do it? Every 3 months? I am not totally gray or anything, but I do have some gray hair.

it depends on how fast your hair grows and how well you tolerate the new growth area showing. Typically, someone who has all over hair color will have roots retouched every 4-6 weeks and someone that gets just highlights/lowlights 8-12 weeks.

I dye mines every 2-3 months dark brown and to keep the color I do a treatment with color that falls off with every wash. Its a cellophane by Matrix which I think they are going to discontinue. Its perfect because it has color and gives it shine and I dont have to dye it every month.

I usually do mine whenever I can afford it...I have pretty short hair so I do mine every 2-2 1/2 months. (I have naturally red hair, but I like getting mine colored a brighter red as my natural red is a dullish red color)
